Life in black and white.

Are you familiar with Springtree Road? If not, you should be. Maya is a wonderful photographer, and gifted artisan (I've never seen yarn more beautiful than her hand-spun ones, available in her Etsy shop).

For the month of November, all of the photos on her blog are in black and white. I've loved seeing the neutral world through Maya's eyes and lens this month...it's really a spectacular essay and I encourage you to visit her.

This week I've been cleaning-up -- cleaning up my house (three bags went to Sallie's Army), cleaning up my professional life (making piles at the office disappear...or trying to, while figuring out how to get more out of my day job), cleaning my to-do list (Christmas shopping -- pretty much done), and cleaning out some space on my camera...since there were apparently 511 pictures on there. Oops.

Some were black and whites from my trip to Paris last month. They are far from perfect, shot with my palm-sized point-and-shoot, but a few aren't half bad considering I'm definitely not a photographer.

A while back Maya shared some advice on her blog, which I believe was something like, "never, ever, ever, ever use the flash!" So I don't. With varying degrees of success.

Some day I'd like to take photography lessons. But I have a whole lot of cleaning to do in my life before I can make the time for that to happen.

For now I'll just enjoy everyone else's!

From a somewhat fair photographer and owner of tons of cameras you did a wonderful job my dear...Get yourself a fancy camera and go crazy....no need for you to take lessons...

I like your photos. It's great when you get the closets in your life - in order. By that I mean your lists checked off, desk cleaned off etc. Real closets are a whole different animal. :)
Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Seeing the world in black and white can be so restful to the eye and the mind. Apparently, I am also in the black and white area and the organizing...we are so kindred. Your photos are art worthy.

The photos are great and they are of Paris too! I like the second one the best. Black and white adds such dimension; architecture looks especially cool.

Lessons? Hmmm a different camera maybe. Try a camera that has full manual capabilities, allows for lens changes. Really like my newest one; a Canon Rebel.

They are wonderful photos.

Fabulous photos!!! :) The most important thing for a photographer is to have a unique perspective and a good eye-- two things that lessons can never teach you, and you my dear have both of those in spades!!!

If you do get in the market for a new camera, I vote Nikon. There is intense rivalry in the photo community between Canon owners and Nikonese. I'm a Nikon-er myself and love every minute of it.

Nice shots Laura!

You can use a flash, it just depends on the situation. You definitely don't want to use the auto setting on your digital point and shoot with the flash. But if you experiment with the manual settings you can actually get some cool shots.

I can help you if you'd like.

I love her advice! It's something I learned the hard way over the years. Her photographs are beautiful. And that top one reminds me so much of the church where we got married exactly three years ago tomorrow!

I love Maya's site, but I have to say those Black and White shots from Paris are pretty spectacular! I love the picture of the door knocker - just gorgeous how you captured the details. Fabulous!

Laura, I am dropping back by to let you know that I love you and wish you the happiest of Thanksgivings! You are a sweetheart, and one of my favorite bloggers. So glad I met you last year. You are such a blessing to me!

Hugs to you, your hubby, and Shorehouse Mom and your little (not size-wise, but in terms of being a hugable original) four-footed fur baby, too!

XO,

Sheila :-)

I love your photographs Laura! I learned that "no flash" rule when I first started blogging from other bloggers but I'm sure there may be a few times when it has to be used...I've seen professionals using it. If you ever find a beginner's SLR photography class in Manhattan please let me know as I also want to take one!

You did a great job... I teach photography and sketching.... and never ever use a flash... but with that in mind wait until the lighting is right. Or put your subject close to a window... You can also adjust the shutter speed (slow it down)
And your photos are wonderful
