Mantle love.
Look who's coming home to the shore house! And -- the man of the house gets all of the credit for this. We were walking through the old carousel building in Asbury Park, which is now home to a flea market on weekends. He spotted it almost immediately and thought it would be great for The Pool Room. He wanted to put up some sort of "drinking ledge" in the room, to which I responded by crinkling up my face like I had just caught a waft of dead fish. The mantle, with its compact size and seven inch ledge, would be the perfect perch for a pint -- and fit in with the character of the house. Sold! We still need to pick it up this weekend, so we'll see how it goes in it's new home.
The prices are a bit on the high side at this new flea but very negotiable. Take the mantle, for example. With no back-and-forth whatsoever we got it for $200 off the asking price (for $295). And -- the mister was also the negotiator. Who knew he had such flea savvy?!
Interestingly, when I suggested getting a mantle for The Napoleon Room several months back he thought I was nuts. "Mantle?...No fireplace?...Huh?"
He's come along so nicely. We're very proud of him.

Laura, that is a beautiful piece! I always wanted a fireplace..I'd settle for just the mantle at this point!
Its going to be fabulous!
I need to check out that flea spot - there used to be a market in there YEEEEEARS ago when it was still a smelly, old, falling down building. I'm glad to see, even though the carousel is long gone, back to some former, useful use.
You and your man are the finder of treasures. I love that mantle, and he will get alot of pleasure placing his pint on it. Enjoy it for many years to come!
Big brownie points for Mr. Shorehouse, Laura! WooHoo! He did great with this, and he great for overcoming his WHY? syndrome. Oh, what glory when that happens with a husband! :-)
XO,
Sheila :-)
What a great find, Laura!! I didn't know you had a pool room. Have we been invited for a tour yet??
Love the changes in the man. Be careful, they start coming with all sorts of treasures on their own. I am still trying to sneak the fishing spear gun off the wall above our mantle! LOL!

The mantel is perfect AND you taught your husband well!! xoxo
Fantastic find, a mantle is a great focal point for any room, can't wait to see what you get up to with it.
Great find! I love the Carousel building...used to enjoy the auctions there many years ago.

What a fabbbbb find!!! lucky you!!!
We have a mantle here in our teeeeeeeny tiiiiny livingroom...just propped against the wall...with fab appliqued garlands and medallions...painted cream..with black accents. We were soooo psyched that it fit here in the "new" place. We got it about 10 yrs ago at Monmouth Antiques in Red Bank....we were on cloud 9!...got it for 200!!! It adds a bit of "class" to our otherwise junky crafty life...haha
Happy Summer!!!!
xoxo Jenny
Love it! Great idea for a drinking perch lol.
All the best,
Allison
Laura, that's a great mantel & will be wonderful at your house.
Loved the story of those old owners stopping by your house. That's so fun! Hope you're having a happy summer.
You crack me up! Reminds me of the day the Fiance asked if we could head over to the Pottery Barn Outlet. I nearly welled up.
It caught me a bit off guard to see a mantle sitting out in the open, away from a fireplace. But it certainly is beautiful.
That man of yours has good taste---take him with you on all the flea market journeys--great find!
