Colorful weekend.

Colorful locals on the boardwalk in Asbury Park.

Here it is, the wee hours of Wednesday morning and I'm just getting around to chatting about my weekend I was making such a big deal about in my last post. I've been busy trying to figure out the whole work/life balance thing. And failing. Miserably.

But I digress.

The weekend started off on Friday night with fireworks at the beach. I took these photos from our roof four blocks away, with my little point and shoot digital (freshly back from Sony...who repaired and returned to me in under a week. Nice job, Sony! Though I'm a bit bummed a nine month old camera even needed repair....).
I can't imagine what the fireworks would have been like up close...our walls were shaking (and so was poor Maggie).

Saturday morning our guests arrived and we headed out to the Harvest Festival in town, which I somehow forgot to take many (re: more than one) pictures at. I did catch the pumpkins drying at the kiddies' table. I think it looks like this little Misha person channeled his inner
Edvard Munch:

I did manage to snag a hat and scarf from a table run by the lovely June:

How cute, right? And does that price tag say $5.00? You betcha. All three of the ladies in my group grabbed hats at that price. We don't knit or crochet, and even if I took it up it would take me at least until Christmas to make myself a hat. Christmas 2010.

The scarf was $10 and, unlike myself, is super long and skinny (black and grey - hard to tell from the photos). Love it!

It was quite warm (close to 80 degrees!) so we headed to the beach with the kiddies, and even got to "stick our piggies in the water," to quote my wee friend Sarah.

I poked my head in the little antique show in Ocean Grove, which was closing in five minutes so it was a literal run through. Nice stuff -- not a lot of furniture, though -- but I'm learning as I embrace the thrift that I can get a lot of what I like at a mere fraction of the cost that vendors sell for.

The next day I took a walk through the bigger antique and art show in Asbury Park, held in the old convention center. Take a look at the ceiling:

I can't wait until they finish restoring (some day!).

I was more than a bit tempted by this old arcade sign, but it was sort of the size of a Honda which made it a bit impractical.

But at $125, if you had a big lofty space I think it would be a perfect art piece. Art = justified purchase.

This hat box was a peach, but also $125 (guess that was my magic number) so definitely out of my range. Travel hat box when I don't travel and don't have hats (I do have one good one, actually) = unjustified purchase.

There was a vendor I've been meaning to take a road trip to visit --
Recycle the Past in Barnegat, NJ -- so I was happy to see them there. Their booth was well staged, and I loved this table:

Lots of sold stickers on their stuff (including those chairs) so I think they had a good weekend.

I had a good weekend, too, as did our Maggie who made a new toddler friend.

Looks like a great weekend! Can't believe that hat was only $5. If I ever managed to knit a hat, I'd want way more money than that for my efforts! Also love the hat box, which was way cool (and way expensive).

You sure are working a lot lately! You need to blow all that off and spend more time on Twitter with us. Get your priorities straight! -Julia :-)

Looks like you had a fun weekend! I loved that sign, too, and that was a good price on a true advertising piece like that. I have a couple of old signs, and I heart them.

The pics of the fireworks were beautiful. I felt like I was there.

Thanks for sharing your weekend with us,

Sheila

Pinch me!!! I've gone to blogger heaven...I just found your blog thru Mabel's House and I am thrilled...You live at the Jersey shore!!! What could be better then the Jersey shore..Can you tell I'm from Jersey. I live in Atlanta and can't wait to move back. We're eyeing homes on Long Beach Island but in the meantime my house is decorated with touches from the garden state. Infact I just posted new pictures last night. I also have great photo's from a few years ago at Asbury Park. In all it's disrepair. I was going to post them then I thought who is going to know where Asbury Park is... I would love to share them with you, if you would like I can e-mail them to you...just let me know...Sue.

Hi Laura

Wow those fireworks photos came out so clear and sharp! I love the parrot too!

That hat was a steal! So cute. I would have loved to have gone to all these antique shows and crzft fairs! Not that I could buy anything, as my house couldn't hold one more item, but I love to browse.

I like Rue's advice -- so true!

Have a fun weekend!

love the pics laura, too funny the hatbox, no hats and no travel, exactly like me! huge price for that I think for one who has to use it as decor

OMG the hat is gorgeous, can't believe the price, it would take me 10 years to make that, if I could in fact make that

I have to tell you... I went to an outdoor event this passed Saturday and there was a group that was walking around with HUGE parots similar to your first photo. They are so beautiful... and scary!

Please email me your address... I didn't keep it... and I want to mail you your prize!

Hi all!

You ladies know how to make a girl's day, I tell you. Thank you for all of the lovely comments. When I go away from the blog for a couple of days and come back to stuff like this...makes me wish I could do this full time! :-) But I love Rue's comment: "I figured out that when you don't live your life, there's nothing to blog about." SO true, hahaha!

Sue, I agree with Jersey Girl in D.C. -- it's so nice to have another Jersey Girl here!! Yay, team!

I've got some great pics in the camera...need to migrate them to this little blog of mine.

I feel a little like the Golden Girls...but, "thank you for being a friend." ;-)
