Rolling out the red (mostly black, with earth tone highlights) carpet.

Oscar Sunday is as good a day as any to roll out a new carpet. There was a brief period of almost-warm-oh-my-did-I-see-crocus-leaves weather today, so we decided to do some pre-spring cleaning. And after scrubbing the floors Cinderalla style, I finally got around to laying out our new runner.

We picked it up at a home store in Asbury Park (Robert Legere) that twice a year marks everything down 50%. I usually pick up super fancy Christmas ornaments at the January sale to use as favors at my cookie party, but this year no ornaments. I was too late to their party.

The runner is replacing this one we got at Pottery Barn a couple of years ago that was a big fat fail. Jute - pretty to look at, impossible to clean up after. I loved the thickness and texture, and the color against the dark wood floors. But it created tumbleweeds larger and more invasive than anything that's ever rolled off our dog during peak shedding season. I would vacuum, go out to dinner, and come home to jute dust. Everywhere.

Speaking of the dog, someone thought the new runner was her new bed.

Maggie's quite good at making herself comfortable. This is how I found her when I woke up this morning:

Looks like someone had a rough (ruff?) Saturday night.

It's so cute how Maggie likes to sleep by her toys!

Love the new rug...I just bought a new jute rug from PB. Oh no...

Laura,

As I read your post I looked down at the almost new rug in my living room from (you guessed it) Pottery Barn and yes, it is jute. I am hoping it holds out for at least a year but I have my doubts. Our Siamese cats think it's their personal scratching post. Needless to say, I spend everyday playing referee between killer tumbleweeds and saber-toothed dust bunnies. Your new runner looks great against your hard wood floors and it's passed the Maggie test!

Your Friend,
Deborah

Oh how cute does Maggie look!! I purposely stayed away from that sale this year...it is evil (good)...spent so much in the last few years that I knew better this time. The awards left me flat this year...maybe it's just my mood but it just wasn't interesting or exciting. Hey...maybe that is the way young and hip is?

Oh yeah, I have dealt with Jute before! It looks awesome but I found it so hard to clean. Now I have an indoor outdoor rug from Ballard designs which I am so happy with!
I just came across your blog today and have been paging thru. Love it! I am now a follower since how can I not follow someone who loves "When Harry Met Sally" AND are also from NJ!!! I have been spending every summer at the NJ shore since I was really little. From what I can tell, you don't live far from the iconic "Vic's" in Bradley Beach - haven't been there in a few years but I am sure it hasn't changed a bit! I grew up going mostly to Spring Lake and Long Beach Island but have been to most places along the coast.
So glad I found your blog. Come by and check mine out...I write about the Caribbean, decorating and of course- New Jersey!
