Yard sales and giveways = good times.

After touring the country and walking away from the internets for a bit, I got right back on the horse this past weekend. After all, it’s finally yard sale season! (Do you hear the angels singing, too?) How better to start than with a private yard sale at Black Eyed Susan’s Kitchen (more on that in a special guest post coming soon!) and with a town wide yard sale in lovely (and moderately affluent) Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ? Then, capping it all off with a blog giveaway?

First, the Avon town wide yard sale…

I covered it all on my beloved 1957 Raleigh (the one that the
divine Fifi Flowers immortalized in paint last summer). It was the perfect way to make sure I covered every nook and cranny of the town, and I promised myself to try and not buy more than would fill the wicker bike basket. But I also reminded myself that I could go home and fetch the car in a pinch.

First stop: Success. This gossip bench was marked $20, but before I was even close enough to touch it I was told I could have it for $15. Sold! So much for the bike basket theory.

I peddled around some more…there were a LOT of sales (at least 50) so it was a bit of sensory overload. There were the good (gossip bench!), the bad (used socks!) and the ugly (too many to list!). But I have to give a shout out to one house on Norwood Avenue, who not only in my humble opinion had the best sale (all vintage, all the time) but had yard sale-appropriate pricing and neatly laid out displays that grouped everything together in a sensible way. From there, I got…

A set of pressed glass dessert cups ($3):

A Fire King baking dish ($2, and after I took this photo it cleaned up like a charm):

And a whole bunch of spoons:

The fancy sugar spoon was $1, and all others were 50 cents each with the exception of the curled handle baby spoon. That was a budget busting $5, but in fairness was not from the Norwood house. I got that in Ocean Grove at a yard sale. I thought it would be great polished up and tied to a baby gift in lieu of a bow.

I already shined up the sugar spoon. Perfect!

At another stop I picked up a vintage Limoges tea cup ($3!) with interesting markings.

I’d never heard of Higgins & Seiter, but according to what I found on eBay they were on West 21st and West 22nd Street near Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. The gold is a little worn away but to me that's just part of the charm!

And here’s where you (insert your drum roll here) get to pretend like you were with me in Avon…

I’m participating in the 3rd Annual Cottage Charm Giveaway. Be sure to click the logo above to see all of the blogs participating…there’s a lot of great stuff (aprons and trinkets and silver, oh my!).

After I polished the sugar spoon, I paired it with the Limoges tea cup and added some fair trade tea. All you need to do is leave a comment and you’re entered for a chance to win the whole trio. Winner will be picked at random on May 30 (and friends abroad are always welcomed!).

Secondly, two of the spoons I picked up at my favorite yard sale have a “Y” monogram:

If you can prove to me that your (or a friend or loved one’s) first or last name starts with “Y,” they are yours. The first commenter who can positively ID the “Y” in their life gets the spoons.

Y? Because I like you.

I love that "gossip" seat - had never heard of it before, but so fun. And as for the giveaway, I love it! I drink at least 3 cups of tea again (no coffee though so dont worry its not caffeine overload). Such a cute set, I love it!

An all-vintage yard sale? I'm jealous. Love that telephone desk, by the way. Good eyes!

I love the giveaway - please count me in! And what great finds - my mom has those same pressed glass dessert glasses. I've always loved them - they make me think of ice cream sundaes since that's what was usually in them. ::Jill

Laura, you have a fabulous eye and always find the best bargains! Your give away is so sweet.
It will be fun looking at the list of other blogs participating in the give away. I'm really getting into vintage -- I have to start scouting out some good yard sales this summer!

Laura,

You always sound like you have the best time when you are out collecting! This sale sounds like it was very cool! I love the gossip bench~what do you have planned for it?

I keep meaning to start checking the paper for our yard sales (actually here we call them garage sales, I think because we are so used to crappy weather ruining yard sales). My neighborhood is nice, but a few blocks away is an "old money" area and I love to mosey around those sales on Fridays. ;-D

Anyway, enter me in the contest. The teacup looks sweet and I love the old fashioned script on the bottom. How can you give that up??

I TOTALLY hear the angels singing, Laura! You did amazing! I can't believe you have even more to share about too. Welcome back from your fabulous vacation and...let the sales...BEGIN! (PS - I may have an extra kid this year when yard-saling - but I also now have a MINIVAN! ha ha ha!)

I love the gossip seat too!! Cute name for a telephone table!.....love the silver and the cup and saucer....no one in the fam has a name with a Y....I tryed to think of a curse word starting with a "Y" for my father-in-law but couldn't come up with anything....shucks...and riding a bike around town is very appealing to me...it just sounds like fun..

Love your finds, Laura! And the only "y" I can think of right now is yawn... I'm sleepy and ready for bed! I decided to blog today, and it took me all day to get pics loaded. LOL! I did not get one productive thing done other than to let the plumber in to fix something. I spent hours looking at shrunken heads. Don't ask! ;-)

Thanks for coming to my blog, scrolling down through all my entries, and giving me SOOOOOO many lovely comments!!!

I gave you several replies over there on my blog, but just in case you never find them I do want to tell you this one thing - - - if you think the fact that my mother was one of nine is a big deal, what will you think when I tell you my father was one of THIRTEEN?????

MY HEART STOPPED FOR A MINUTE WHEN I SAW YOUR GOSSIP BENCH. MY GRANDMOTHER HAD ONE JUST LIKE THAT BUT I THINK THE WOOD WAS DARKER. I CAN STILL SEE HER SETTING ON THAT BENCH TALKING. I ALWAYS LOVED IT SO VERY MUCH BUT IT WAS AUCTIONED OFF...IN 1976 IT WENT FOR 75.00 AT AUCTION...YOU REALLY GOT A DEAL.
I LOVE YOUR GIVE-AWAY. WHAT I THOUGHT WAS NEAT IS THE SPOON YOU ARE GIVING AWAY WITH THE TEA CUP IS MY PATTERN.
BLESSINGS TO YOU FOR YOUR GIVE-AWAY.
debbie
I would love for you to stop by and see me and let me see where you place your gossip bench

Those gossip benches are my biggest seller! I can't keep them around.

My parents had one in their hallway when I was a teen. "Gossip bench" is such a perfect name for it. Oh, if you only knew the gossip I shared from that bench!

I love your seat! How fun is this going to be to dress her up a bit with new and fun fabric. This is one of my favorite times of years to see what treasures I can find. I did find some last week, that I posted. In the weeks ahead I will be going to, two large flea markets in the area I can't wait.

No "y" here, but how about a "g"? LoL...

Have a golden weekend my friend! xoxo

Wow, you found some great stuff! Someone from my childhood had a gossip seat...maybe my grandma? I just can't remember. I love the design on the chair back.

You know, I have seen a lot of old Fire King and Pyrex baking dishes, but never one with that type of knob on the lid. The knob just MAKES it, don't you think? And the dessert cups are wonderful.

I'd love to win that teacup and spoon and tea! I think we definitely have similar taste in vintage!

Well, Laura, I have to say that I would have loved that sale in Avon, but we can only be in one place at a time...or so they say. The gossip bench was an amazing find and it is my personal opinion that you can never have too many silver teaspoons :) the teacup was a very unique find. This post reinforces how lucky we are to live where we do. Hope you are enjoying the weekend.
